The Last Of Us Part 2: Every Main Character's First And Last Line In The Game (2024)

Regardless of where you fall in terms of your opinion on The Last of Us Part II, developed by Naughty Dog, it's hard to deny the level of quality this game shipped with. The writing weaved a story that had you second-guess which characters you morally aligned with and who was in the right.

In addition to several returning characters from the first game in the series, the sequel introduced a handful of new faces that brought fascinating and unique perspectives in terms of those who manage to survive an apocalypse and what they must do to continue to do so. Here we look at the first and last words spoken by some of the most important characters in the story.

8 Tommy

  • First - "Jesus Christ, Joel. What’d you do?"
  • Last - "No... no..."

Tommy, even since the first game, always felt like the more cautious and sensible of the two Miller brothers and was often the bouncing board for Joel's decisions. They didn't always see eye-to-eye, especially when Tommy found safety as a member of the Fireflies, but they would protect one another until their dying breath. During the heat of the moment Tommy's death happens so quickly it's hard to take it all in, especially since it happens right after Jesse is also killed. The saddest part is that he had a wife and the two separated before he would ultimately find himself the victim of Abby's rage, leaving no one outside of Ellie to truly mourn his passing.

7 Yara

  • First - "Cut her down."
  • Last - "This way."

Yara was as tough as they come, and she was the reason why Abby was able to survive after being captured. From her first line to her last Yara was focused on helping those around her feel safe and ushering them in the right direction. Without Yara, it's unclear what would have happened to Lev as the world tends to be harsh to the trans community.

Lev was able to survive and be who he truly was thanks to the guidance and acceptance of Yara. Her death is an emotional gut-punch as it feels as though it comes out of nowhere. In her final moments, she kills Issac and helps Abby and Lev escape from the Washington Liberation Front.

6 Lev

The Last Of Us Part 2: Every Main Character's First And Last Line In The Game (3)
  • First - "Yara!"
  • Last - "Why do you make me repeat whenever I’m wrong?"

Lev's introduction is neat because it showcases what he's willing to do to save his sister. In the same breath, it's clear he's more than capable of surviving on his own and is quite the shot with a bow in his hands. Abby understands what one small mistake can cost you in the apocalypse in which they find themselves, so she makes sure to teach Lev this important lesson. He's young and doesn't quite understand what she's doing, and in his final words to her in the game, he's asking for clarity from her.

5 Jesse

  • First - "Morning!"
  • Last - "All right. How about, my friends can’t get out of their damn way?"

When it comes to supporting characters, they're often dealt a rough hand as they serve as bouncing boards for main characters, but at the same time, if done right, can provide emotionally impactful moments leading to character growth moments. Jesse isn't only a source of comedic relief, but he helps Ellie and Dina understand that they're right for one another, despite him seemingly having a thing for both of them. The last words he speaks are offering a bit of advice toward the two, which is immediately followed by him being killed thanks in large part to Ellie's actions toward Abby.

4 Dina

The Last Of Us Part 2: Every Main Character's First And Last Line In The Game (5)
  • First - "Just gimme a minute!"
  • Last - "We’ve got a family. She doesn’t get to be more important than that. No. I’m not gonna do this again."

At first, it's unclear whether Dina is the right fit for Ellie as she's a bit more abrasive and extroverted and that doesn't always mix well with a reserved recluse. Over time their relationship unfolds in a way that demonstrates how Dina calls Ellie out on her decisions and is solely focused on trying to make Ellie shed her anger and vengeful drive towards violence. The last time we see Dina she's begging Ellie to choose their family over Abby and it breaks her heart to see that nothing could get in the way of Ellie and her deep-rooted hatred towards the person that took so much away from her.

3 Abby

The Last Of Us Part 2: Every Main Character's First And Last Line In The Game (6)
  • First - "Owen... Do we have to go back this way?"
  • Last - "Okay. Okay."

Abby is a very divisive character in The Last of Us Part 2 for a variety of reasons and she's introduced in a vague, mysterious, but unnerving way. Her group is traversing the wilderness in the dead of winter, scouting the place that Ellie and Joel now call home. Through the course of the game the story provides plenty of context as to why you should be sympathetic, or at the very least understand Abby's perspective.

By the time she and Ellie have their climactic showdown in the shallow ocean, she's overcome her anger and sense of revenge and simply wants it to be over. She understands Ellie is still violently angry with her and in what could be Abby's final moments alive her only concern was making sure that Ellie didn't hurt Lev, her newly found family.

2 Joel

The Last Of Us Part 2: Every Main Character's First And Last Line In The Game (7)
  • First - "I don’t know what happened. I was supposed to take her to the Fireflies and walk away."
  • Last - "I’d like that."

The beauty of The Last of Us Part 2 is that it immediately picks up in a way from where the first game left off. Joel is contemplating his decision to save Ellie from the Fireflies at the cost of numerous lives he took while escaping their facility. He would do anything to save her, and in a moment of worry, he chose to protect her regardless of what it cost humankind. Joel and Ellie didn't always get along, but more than anything he wanted her to be safe and happy. The last thing we hear him say in a flashback conversation with Ellie shown at the end of the game is him reassuring her that'd he'd like to see her forgive him for his choice to save her, despite her wishes.

1 Ellie

The Last Of Us Part 2: Every Main Character's First And Last Line In The Game (8)
  • First - "Jesus. You almost gave me a heart attack."
  • Last - "Okay. I’ll see you around."

Foreshadowing can be done in several ways in storytelling, and with The Last Of Us Part 2, Ellie's first line in the game is devastating in hindsight. She jokes about Joel scaring her as he enters her room, but she'd later watch him be killed right in front of her, making her heart beat in a very similarly rapid way. It all comes full circle though, as Ellie decompresses back at her and Dina's old home she remembers a conversation she had with Joel, before everything she cared for disappeared.
